The long and unfortunate rule of D'Omedes led to the election, on 11th September 1553,
of Claude De La Sengle, a Knight of the "Langue" of France. He made Fort St. Michael
a new city, "Senglea", to which he gave his own name. He also extended the fortifications of "Birgu"
(a direct consequence of Dragut's attack of 1551). He died at Notabile on 18th
August 1557. He was also buried in the chapel of Fort St.Angelo. His heart was buried in
the Church of the Annuncition, outside Rabat.
