Three days after the death of Grandmaster De Lascaris, Martin De Redin, an Aragonese and
Viceroy of Sicily, was proclaimed Grandmaster. He assumed the government of the Malta on 10th September 1657. One
of the first thoughts of De Redin was to provide for the defence of the coast and the guarding of it at night,
chiefly for the purpose of preventing the landing of the enemy. He ordered thirteen towers to be built along the
coast in less than a year, arming each with two guns. He died on the 6th of February 1660.
