School Discipline Policy

Regulations and Procedures
1 School Fees/Contributions
1.1 Fees are payable every term in advance and they are due by the first day of each term.
1.2 Parents who do not receive an invoice by the first day of term or do not receive a receipt within three weeks of making payment are advised to contact the School Administrator.
1.3 Cheques should be made payable to San Andrea School and a receipt will be issued.
1.4 A letter by the School Administrator along with a statement will be sent after four weeks from the beginning of term to remind parents who have not yet settled their account. Regular statements will be sent thereafter.
1.5 Non-payment of fees/contributions will lead to suspension of all communication and services until such time as all dues to the School are settled. The School reserves the right to follow those procedures provided by law to secure payment of fees that are overdue.
2.1 For safety reasons, children are not to be left unaccompanied whilst waiting for the van and on their return home. You are kindly requested to obtain the telephone number and name of the driver in order to inform him/her if the child will not be attending school on a particular day. Likewise, the driver is to be informed about the child’s return to school. We cannot emphasise enough the importance of having the children ready and waiting for the vans in good time. Van drivers simply cannot wait for the children to be ready.
2.2 Students will only be allowed to be picked up or dropped off at different locations to that specified in the Transport Application Form, if the seating capacity allows such a change. Prior permission by parents has to be sought from the driver in question.
2.3 Parents wishing their children to avail themselves of school transport are expected to provide all necessary information when requested, on the prescribed Transport Application Form, so that prior arrangements can be made before the start of the scholastic year.
2.4 The cost of this service is set by the contractor in agreement with the school and will be included in the invoice of school. Payment should be made in advance by the first day of each term.
2.5 Children will wear the correct uniform when travelling to and from school, and they will behave in the appropriate manner. Disciplinary action will be taken against children who are reported by the supervisors for misbehaving and this may take the form of exclusion from any transport already paid for. Parents are required to have their children waiting for the bus at the agreed time and pick up point.
2.6 School transport is organised as an added service for the convenience of parents and students but the school is not responsible for transporting students to and from school. Please note that any queries regarding routes, times, pick up / drop off points, etc. should be directed to Mr. Sunny Galea on mobile no. 9949 8833.
3 Absence From School
3.1 Any absence from school, other than sickness, should be approved in advance by the Head of School. For long periods of absence you are asked to obtain approval from the Education Division. It is strongly recommended that family holidays/trips abroad coincide with school holidays.
3.2 A written note from parents must explain all unavoidable and unexpected absences. A doctor’s note must be produced for periods of sickness lasting three or more days. A medical certificate is also required when a student is absent for four inconsecutive days within the same month. A written note from parents must be produced for absence of one or two days.
3.3 Attendance and Punctuality - Regular attendance and punctuality is very important if your child is to learn and achieve well. Long and frequent absences disrupt learning and it is extremely difficult to catch up with what has been missed. You have a legal duty to ensure your child attends school. Absence from school can only be justified if student is ill. The School is obliged to inform the Educational Authorities of unjustified habitual absences from school.
3.4 Your child must arrive in school before 8.20 a.m. The senior school doors will be closed after 8.20am. If students arrive after registration, they will not be allowed to enter the first lesson.
3.5 8.00 a.m. School opens.
8.20 a.m. Bell rings for Assembly.
8.30 a.m. Registration. All students to go to the classroom of the first lesson.
8.35 a.m. Bell rings for first lesson.
3.6 If students arrive late on a regular basis, they will be required to make up for time lost during break time in the study hall (break detention).
4 Uniforms and Equipment
4.1 Students attending San Andrea School are expected to uphold the school image and are therefore requested to wear the full uniform during school hours. Please note that children will not be allowed to join their lesson or go on School outings if their uniform is not complete and may be sent home.
4.2 Shirts must be tucked in at all times and cardigans buttoned up. All pupils will be expected to wear a belt at all times. Trousers to be worn at the waist. No hipsters allowed. Only black smart school shoes are permitted.
4.3 All items of clothing must conform to the published uniform in terms of colour and style.
4.4 All items of clothing/equipment must be marked with the student’s name.
4.5 The school cannot accept responsibility for personal possessions which are lost or damaged through the negligence of the students or the action of a third party. Students are not allowed to bring mobile phones and other electronic items/gadgets to school (e.g. MP3’s, MP4’s CD/DVD players, iPods, Tablets, Camcorders, digital cameras etc.).
4.6 Hair: Girls with long hair should have it tied neatly back. Only black hair accessories will be allowed. Short hair should be kept neatly away from the face. Boys should keep their hair short and neat. No spiky hair or colours or shaven heads are allowed. Hair dye is strictly prohibited. Students with fancy hairstyles will not be allowed to attend for lessons & will be sent home.
4.7 Accessories: No jewellery is allowed, except for a watch. Girls are allowed to have one pair of stud earrings. Students are not permitted to cover their piercings and as such these have to be removed. Students not complying with this will be sent home. Unsuitable jewellery will be confiscated. No make-up is allowed, including nail varnish.
4.8 All boys attending San Andrea Senior School will be required to wear long trousers throughout the scholastic year. Girls will be given the option to wear culottes or long trousers.
4.9 For sports all pupils are expected to have the correct school sports wear. This includes:-
White polo shirt with school logo
Trainers (white, little colour allowed)
School baseball cap
Track suit (winter)
4.10 Parents and guardians are kindly urged to support the School in upholding the San Andrea School Image and ensure that their child abides by the uniform policy.
5.1 The academic programme at San Andrea provides for a wide range of ability, but requires effort, perseverance and progress from the children.
5.2 Parents are expected to provide the right conditions for study at home and to ensure that out of school activities, including “private lessons”, do not conflict with school-work. Parents are invited to discuss with the Head of School before sending their children to private lessons.
5.3 Parents should encourage children to participate in the extracurricular activities, which are organised by the school in order to provide a complete broad based educational experience.
5.4 Parents are expected to monitor their children’s progress through the Klikks Online School Management System, home-work, examinations and assessments, written reports and parent-teacher consultations.
5.5 The Head of School in conjunction with educational specialists reserves the right to use her professional judgement in determining the academic programme most appropriate for any particular child.
6.1 All students are required to conform to the Code of Conduct and School Procedures. They are expected to respect the rights of others at all times.
6.2 Parents should ensure that their children have a smart appearance when they leave home to travel to school, and hairstyles should conform to accepted school norms.
6.3 Any damage to school property, wilful or otherwise, or damage which results from negligence on the part of students, will be charged to parents.
6.4 Bullying will not be tolerated. Any type of violence for any reason will be considered a serious misconduct and dealt with accordingly.
6.5 A student who misbehaves will be given a negative report (infraction) which is logged onto the Klikks School Management Online System. Another consequence might be community service during the second break.
6.6 In the case of serious misconduct, the Head of School reserves the right to suspend a child from attending school. In the case of physical violence and substance abuse, police intervention might also be sought.
6.7 A student who misbehaves or fails to produce work of a satisfactory standard may be detained during break or after school. Parents will be given 24 hours’ notice of detention.
6.8 Positive reports (appraisals) will be given to students who show ample evidence of adherence to the School’s Code of Conduct.
7. School Nutrition Policy
7.1 Students are to be provided with healthy sandwiches and are not to bring glass containers or bottles to school. Fruit squashes, snack packets, sweets and junk food will not be allowed. In line with school policy, we encourage fruit, water and diluted fruit juice.
7.2 The school, together with parents, has a responsibility to educate students about nutrition. The School canteen has been established to benefit children:
· by making it possible for children to buy nutritious and healthy food at competitive prices during the school day;
· by making it easier for children to buy lunch within the school grounds;
· by providing a varied selection of food and dishes.
8. Mobile Telephones
Students are NOT allowed to bring mobile telephones to school. Any mobile phones found will be immediately confiscated and will be returned at the end of term. The School reserves the right to conduct ad hoc searches as it deems fit. The School is not responsible if a mobile goes missing.
9. Use of Telephone
Permission will only be granted in serious need. Students will not be permitted to call parents to bring along items carelessly forgotten at home or any frivolous requests.
10. Use of Lift
Should a student be required to make use of the lift, a medical certificate and/or a detailed note from the parents/guardians defining the condition and the number of days needed for using the lift, must be handed in to Ms. Anna Abela (school secretary) or to the Assistant Head. The key is to be retuned back to the school after the number of days specified in the certificate/note has elapsed. The student will be lent the special lift key against a deposit of 10 Euro. He/she will be refunded the deposit once the special lift key is returned to Ms. Anna Abela.
11. Pick up from School due to sickness/injury
Students who are diagnosed by the School Nurse/Staff to be unfit to remain at school will be sent home. Parents/guardians will be informed to pick up a sick/injured student by either the School Nurse herself or one of the Staff. Parents should not entertain requests for pick up from school directly from their children.
12. Pick up Time
12.1 Students are to be picked up from the Senior School. They will not be allowed to run about in the car park.
12.2 Those students not attending extra-curricular activities should be picked up by
12.3 Those children using school transport are to report at the respective transport meeting points immediately after the last school bell. The school will not be responsible for those students who as a result of lingering on the school premises miss their transport or who are not picked up by 3:00 p.m.
CODE OF CONDUCT FOR STUDENTS USING SCHOOL TRANSPORT
The following is a Code of Conduct for students to follow when travelling on school transport. It is meant to be a set of guidelines to help ensure that students of San Andrea School behave sensibly and safely during their journey to and from school. This Code also advises the school community of the broad procedures that are already being used and which will be updated periodically as necessary. It also provides an agreed systematic process so that disruptions or misbehaviour by students while using school transport are dealt with quickly and fairly.
Besides providing a holistic education for its pupils, San Andrea School prides itself on being a caring community. Thus, for the majority of students, complying with the Code will not require any change in their current behaviour. By continuing to act in accordance with the standards already set out by the school, namely the values of REASON, RESPECT, RESPONSIBILITY, students will help ensure that all passengers have a safe and comfortable journey.
The following are some of the types of behaviour that are encouraged and those which are not allowed.
- ride only on their assigned bus/van unless permission has been given by the school authorities to do otherwise
- board the bus/van quietly without pushing, calling out or shouting
- follow the instructions from their driver/supervisor/teacher or school aide without argument
- Sit properly on available or allocated seat and remain seated while bus/van is in motion
- Speak quietly without creating unnecessary noise
- maintain appropriate behaviour towards the driver, supervisor and other students
- treat other people and their possessions with respect
- keep the bus/van clean and refrain from throwing refuse out of the windows
- keep bags and personal belongings out of the way
- wait until the bus/van stops before standing to get off
- alight from the bus/van in an orderly manner
- in case of an emergency or a breakdown, follow the driver’s/supervisor’s directions.
Students SHOULD NOT:
- push or shove other students while waiting to get on the bus/van
- stand or move from place to place during the trip
- tease, scuffle, trip, hold or hit other students EVEN IF THIS IS MEANT JOKINGLY
- fight or use vulgar, abusive or threatening language or make obscene gestures
- have in their possession items that can cause injury to passengers on the bus/van. These include, but are not limited to, sticks, breakable containers and pointed instruments
- extend his/her head, arms or hands out of the windows at any time
- place feet on the seats
- speak to the bus driver unless necessary
- damage interior or exterior of the bus/van
- touch emergency equipment
Most students behave appropriately most of the time. It is unfortunate that misbehaviour by a few students can make travel unpleasant for other students and disrupt the driver. When a student does not abide by the above Code action will be taken by the school which may range from warnings to a ban to travel on school transport for a number of days or permanently. Factors which will be taken into consideration include:
- the threat to the safety of the passengers on board and the nature of the incident
- the seriousness of the breach
- whether the breach was a first or one of a series of incidents about which the student had been previously cautioned
We will continue to do our outmost to encourage and expect students to behave appropriately on school transport. It is the duty of bus drivers to safely transport students just as it is the duty of parents/carers to acquaint their children with the type of behaviour required, and to insist that they behave while travelling on the bus/van.
Parents and carers should discuss the above Code with their children so that students and the school community all clearly understand what they should or should not do. Observing this Code will be another step towards achieving our aim of providing a safe, disciplined and welcoming school for all.
Pupil’s Code of Conduct

1. Your main aim at school is to achieve the best possible standard of academic work in accordance with your ability. This means that you have an obligation to:-
· be well-disciplined and attentive in class so that each lesson is a productive experience.
· be respectful to your teachers and fellow students by avoiding any disruption of their efforts.
· complete your homework neatly, diligently and on time.
· respond to suggestions for improvement and to ask if you are not sure about anything.
2. As a member of the school community you are expected to conduct yourself in such a way as to promote its reputation. This means that you have an obligation to:-
· be smart in your appearance at all times, wearing your uniform correctly.
· be well behaved on the way to and from school.
· be considerate of others by avoiding unnecessarily noisy and boisterous behaviour, by avoiding teasing that can easily become bullying, and by helping others who need your assistance and friendship.
3. You have an obligation to respect all property that is not yours by:-
· not interfering with the belongings of others, even in fun.
· placing all litter in the bins provided for that purpose.
· taking care of the school buildings and equipment that is provided for the benefit of all.
4. The school aims to provide opportunities for you to develop as a mature person with a well-rounded and confident personality and a proper sense of personal values. You can work towards this goal by:-
· taking a full and active part in the various extra-curricular activities.
· offering help to your teachers and fellow students whenever required and by accepting any responsibilities that are available.
· reviewing your overall performance as objectively as possible at regular intervals in order to find ways in which you can improve.
· seeking advice and guidance when you encounter special personal difficulties.
Parents should do their best to follow-up on the positive and negative reports which are given to their children on a daily basis by frequently accessing the Klikks School Management Online System.
Parents and students are kindly asked to sign the enclosed declaration form (one per student). The signed declaration should be handed in to the Class Tutor on the first day of the scholastic year.

HOMEWORK INFORMATION FOR PARENTS & GUARDIANS
Homework is an important part of school routine. Research has shown that homework can make a significant contribution to student’s progress at school.
The Aims of Homework
- To encourage independent learning and self-discipline.
- To consolidate and reinforce skills and understanding developed during lessons.
- To encourage and develop planning and research skills.
- To encourage the involvement of parents and carers in supporting students’ learning.
Type of Homework
Not all homework will involve written tasks, but other types of homework are no less important and will help students develop skills to raise their achievement.
Examples of activities which may be given as homework
Revision Collecting materials
Drafting Simple Experiments
Conducting interviews Projects
Drawing Practice – learning by doing
Essay writing Designing
In Grades 8 & 9 students will be expected to do approximately 1 1/2 hours per night.
In Grade 10 students will be expected to do approximately 2 1/2 hours per night.
In Grades 11 & 12 students will be expected to do approximately 3 hours per night. Regular and daily revision is expected to be carried out.
It should be stressed that these are only guidelines. Sometimes it may be inappropriate to set homework on the recommended night and another night could be used. In such cases students will be given a reasonable amount of time to complete the task. It may also be necessary to set more homework at certain times particularly as students get older and approach examinations.
Completion of Homework
Students will find homework easier to complete if there is a reasonably quiet and peaceful place available to do it. Students are encouraged to use the Library for research purposes during break time.
Parents and Carers are asked and expected to encourage and check that students do complete homework. Parents will be informed if students persistently fail to complete homework. All completed homework will be acknowledged/marked. Homework handed in late may not be marked. Parents will be informed if a student persistently fails to complete/hand in homework.
All students need to have at least two reliable homework buddies. These students will be responsible to keep a record of any work given (including handouts) when their buddy is off school. Moreover, Teachers upload the H.W.s (including any handouts) on the Klikks School Management Online System. The School Secretary will not be in a position to collate homework for absent students.
